Stanford had a quirky program called The Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, where I earned a B.A. in Music, Science, and Tech in 2002. I worked in the campus recording studio and created sound effects and music for student films.
My first experience in ad music came soon after as an assistant producer to John King of the Dust Brothers (Beck, Beastie Boys, Fight Club Soundtrack). We were hired to score a HUMMER H2 commercial, and we even got to choose the musical direction. It was there I learned how fast-paced this industry is.
For several years I worked as Pro Tools and Sound Design instructor at The Los Angeles Film School. I was lucky to work with some amazing filmmakers including Brandon Trost (Neighbors) , Kyle Newacheck (Workaholics) and many others who were students there. During this time I toured and released records with my experimental party band, The Mae Shi (Kill Rock Stars). Several Mae Shi tracks were licensed for film and tv, which got attention from some of the newer music companies on the west coast.
Around 2007 I began composing for Mophonics Inc, an ad music house in Venice, CA and by 2009 I was writing exclusively for them. This is where my ad music career began, and through the following decade I built professional relationships with other agencies and jingle houses. Here are a few I still work with:
During this time I was fortunate to work on several CLO nominated ads, and during my stint as music editor at Media Arts Lab, two of our spots gold and bronze awards (see HERE and HERE) . In 2017, DREAM won the Grand Lion Award for music at the Cannes Film Festival.
I currently operate studios in Los Angeles and San Fransisco Bay areas and work under my LLC Thumper Sound. While we often work with big brands, I seek out projects with small companies, tech startups, as well as DIY content creators on YouTube and Instagram. I’m always looking for collaborations and partnerships. Contact me for more info if you want to know more of my story or want to say hello! CONTACT HERE
